This interactive generative artwork decomposes a real-time video feed captured by the computer webcam to produce a live mosaic-like composition, perpetually changing in size, rotation, and speed. By intermixing the actual moment with previously captured and saved frames, it creates a dynamic visual experience that challenges traditional perceptions of time and space. Each frame is rendered as a spatial discontinuity, and their sequence does not ensure an accurate linear mapping of time, thus resulting in a hypnotic flow where continuity is disrupted. The composition becomes a fluid tapestry of visual fragments, reflecting the non-linear nature of human memory. Just as our memories often intertwine and overlap, triggering recollections of other times and places, this artwork blurs the lines between the immediate and the recalled, the now and the then, the space this is and the space that was. The result is an evocative rendition of the human mind and its continuous flow of ideas, thoughts, and memories. Space dissolves into time within this digital mosaic, as it unfolds into a series of interconnected moments, much like the fragments of our inner reflections. This artistic exploration mirrors the way our consciousness navigates through the layers of past experiences, constantly reshaping and redefining our understanding of the present. By disrupting the conventional flow of time and space, the artwork offers a commentary on the fluidity of human perception, encouraging a deeper contemplation of the complexities of memory and identity.
First version (2017)
Real-time capture of a generative installation programmed in Processing, which uses live video input and random stills from the same live stream to generate a constant flow of segments of space and time, present and past, captured by the camera. Only the flow matters. Only the flow is hypnotic. Space dissolves in time. Time is no longer linear.
