Generative video art – Image Play 2021 colloquium

Published on the site on 10 November 2021

On the occasion of the Image Play Festival (International Video Art Festival), I was invited to give a talk, and the topic I chose was Generative Video Art as a sub-field of video art, setting out a theoretical and practical framework for this sub-genre.

Historically and generally, generative art is used to generate abstract images, corresponding to frames of instances (or generations) of the activity of an evolutionary system that develops within the aesthetic boundaries defined by its author/programmer.

But those aesthetic boundaries may also include vectors that can be mapped onto the concepts of shot, sequence, rhythm and editing. It may also embrace a figurative aesthetic, and extend to the generation of audio, all these elements still belonging to an autonomous system.

And in that case, its output being a constant and uninterrupted audiovisual stream, can we not speak of generative video art? From this perspective, concrete examples are discussed and key concepts are suggested so that this field can be seen as a creative intersection of two artistic genres often regarded as separate.
