Post-fake

Published on the site on 12 May 2021

On 11 May the international launch of the second volume of Cenários Comunicacionais took place; I have the pleasure and privilege of contributing a chapter to it, devoted to the phenomenon of "post-fake".

Under the title REALIDADE PÓS-FAKE: UMA VISÃO ATRAVÉS DA ARTE DIGITAL (Post-fake reality: a view through digital art), I address the concept of "post-fake" in the age of prefixes and buzzwords, presenting it as a widely disseminated phenomenon, albeit blurred by a technological determinism embodied in black boxes.

Its origins lie in propaganda, in the conscious use of logical fallacies and in the capture of attention, with the aim of affecting reality forcefully. This analysis is conducted through digital art, where examples of black boxes abound, from modern mobile apps such as FaceApp or TikTok to the ubiquitous Photoshop. I propose an artivist use of "post-fake" to expose the inner, hidden workings of these black boxes, through their creative subversion and critical use, in the service of better and more transparent communication and of understanding the structures and mechanisms underlying the social fabric.
