JUSTAPOSIÇÃO is the outcome of an artivist work on gender inequality in sport, commissioned for the exhibition Mulheres no Desporto: Pioneirismo, Desafios, Inspiração, Igualdade (Women in Sport: Pioneering, Challenges, Inspiration, Equality) at the Museu Nacional do Desporto.
Superimposed images of men and women photographed at the end of the 19th century, and the naturalness of their movements and bodies, are reinterpreted through a juxtaposed text that brings out hitherto hidden – or perhaps surreal – features and meanings.
Generative art, the genre to which this work belongs, consists in the aesthetic exploration of an autonomous system, programmed and parameterised by its author, whose results or combinations are potentially infinite and distinct, generating new images at each run. Such systems combine – juxtapose – chaos and order: the selection, position and colouring of the images are decided by the system, with some random parameters (chaos), while the flow of the text is predefined and follows its original construction (order).

Conceptually, four fundamental pillars can be identified:
- the intrinsic equality of all human beings, expressed through the 11 most common chemical elements in our make-up (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, calcium, phosphorus, sulphur, potassium, sodium, chlorine and magnesium);
- a set of statistical information on the subject, from credible and reputable sources;
- Eadweard Muybridge's pioneering chronophotographic work on animal locomotion, carried out between 1878 and 1886, in which female human models appear alongside male ones;
- an original poetic text in 11 acts, representing different individual and collective personas, each speaking about the subject through wordplay around terms such as transposição (transposition), desigualdade (inequality) or superação (overcoming), among others.
The title is itself a small play on the word justaposição (juxtaposition): the work rests on the superimposition of complementary semantic layers, thereby building a concept of justa posição (a fair position) on gender (in)equality in sport.
The work involved a complex, almost divergent research process, the first three pillars presenting themselves as possible sources of inspiration from the outset. Much of Eadweard Muybridge's photographic archive is now in the public domain and accessible through Wikimedia Commons, making it possible to create animations from the richest and best-documented sequences; there are indeed several animated GIFs that show this.
On the other hand, statistical information on inequality in sport is abundant, so a selection process was needed to avoid irrelevance through excess and habituation.
However, all these elements were disconnected from one another, and no other external element could be found to act as a unifier. Hence the aim of creating an original text to serve that purpose. Interestingly, the text was revised several times under the influence of the work it became part of: at each test, watching its combination with the moving images often revealed the need for adjustments, whether in the division of the acts, in the metre of the lines, or in the very construction and choice of words.
The poem appears in the work in its original Portuguese.
A quantas provas femininas assististe? Carbono. De calcinada e proibida a desigual. Nor-mal? Se tenho músculos, sou feia? Se combato, sou agressiva? E se é essa a tua ideia... é tua a invectiva, e minha a superação. Desafio a gravidade e o preconceito. A igual tudo é dado. A mim? A superação é o respeito. Des-igualdade. Respiro e ensejo. Des-ejo igualdade. Anseio. Ardo. Arde! Vontade pura. Cloro. De sal a sol, de céu a céu, sou constante hermética, atrator simbólico, magnésio e alma. Sou.
Technically, the work was entirely programmed in Processing 4.0, with Adobe Premiere used for pre- and post-production. The work on show is a real-time video capture of the system running (runtime).
