The image submitted to the call, C₽IMINAL, 2023, was generated with Stable Diffusion.
Against war, for peace. In the 1980s the band Culture Club released a song called "The War Song", whose chorus echoed "war is stupid". Four decades on, that chorus could change to proclaim, forcefully, "war is criminal". Deliberately causing misery, hunger, suffering and death is criminal behaviour. And in a global scenario marked by hunger, climate change and ecological disasters, it deserves the strongest condemnation.
The grim vision of a war-ravaged cityscape, in which the word "C₽IMINAL" can be made out, formed from rubble and clouds of smoke, alludes to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but could also be about the war in Syria, in Palestine (which had not yet begun at the time of submission) or in any other nation.
